Men vs Cosplay Launches a 2014 Gaming Calendar Kickstarter
Newcomer and award-winning male cosplayers gear up for gaming fans

Male cosplayers, portraying fan-favorite gaming leads like Snake, Ezio, Commander Shepard, and Chris Redfield, gather together to show off their best and bring a calendar to life through a new Kickstarter launched by a group dubbed Men vs Cosplay (a tounge-in-cheek riff to reality TV shows).

Dedicated to highlighting skilled cosplay guys, Men vs Cosplay chose a gaming theme for their first calendar, and have already solicited the talents of several highly talented male costumers from around the world. The first nine confirmed are; Allen Amis (a project founder and renowned for his Samurai Fett cosplay featured in publications like IO9), David “Cap” Santiago (creator of several award-winning cosplays, notably his Dovahkiin), Rick Boer (of RBF Productions and internationally known for his Assassin’s Creed and Solid Snake costume work), Bill Doran (of Punished Props), Sylar Warren (of award-winning cosplay team Aicosu), Ben Dickinson (featuring his Chris Redfield), Mike Hagy (of Arcturus Cosplay), Chris Rosario (moonlighting as NYC Assassin) and Kevin Bley (widely requested for his Alistair cosplay).

Gaming enthusiast and artist Anabel Martinez teamed up with Allen Amis, a costume builder and fabricator, to launch the project. “Allen and I always teased the idea of having a calendar for the cosplay dudes, and decided to finally pull the trigger and launch the project,” explained Martinez. “Several [male-only] projects we found online were kind of asides that never say the light of day. I was worried we’d face similar challenges, but the reception from the get-go was phenomenal.”

David “Cap” Santiago, known for his God of War, Skyrim, and Guardians of the Galaxy costumes, introduced himself to the pair at Phoenix Comicon 2013 after learning about the project through another male cosplayer. “Seeing his Dovahkiin cosplay in action, and the reaction it got from the comic-con attendees, kind of reiterated that we really wanted to pour our best into the project,” Amis enthused.

Bolstered by a positive community reaction through their growing Facebook fan page, including Men vs Cosplay is close to wrapping up the months. Stretch goals may also be in the works, depending on community support. “We have a great roster so far, but Allen and I can only do so much with just the two of us. Friends and project fans have been great with recommendations and support, and we’re getting tons of male cosplayers sharing links to their own sites.”

As for listening to the community feedback? Requests for favorite characters coming in on a regular basis. “Everyone wants to see Nathan Drake,” Martinez smiled. “We’ll make it happen.”

Kickstarter tiers start at $5. The calendar itself is offered for $20 shipped (with bonuses).
